Artist Statement

I work directly from observation in my still life paintings. The viewer will be engaged by either a straightforward enjoyment of the image itself or respond to a more complex interpretation. When I arrange my still life objects I am thinking about symbols and ideas or a theme that may be associated with them.

In my landscapes I feel compelled to express through the medium of oil paint those scenes which wake in me a sense of wonder or excitement. The seasons and the constantly changing light provide an unending source of inspiration for me. Some of the landscapes are "en plein air" Other paintings are developed from on site sketches and slides for reference. Place, time, and color are important elements.

About the Artist

Joanne Kunz has a B. A. from Temple University. She studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and with many of the area's fine artists. Her oil paintings depict the landscape, still life and figure in a representational style. Her work is included in many private collections.
